Konjufca at the UN: Serbia Must Face Reality and Recognize Kosovo

At the latest session of the United Nations Security Council, where the Secretary-General’s report on United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo was reviewed, strong statements were delivered regarding the situation in Kosovo. A key voice in the debate was Glauk Konjufca, who presented Kosovo’s position before the Council. In his address, Konjufca stressed that Serbia must confront the current reality in the region and move toward recognizing Kosovo’s independence. He argued that continued denial of Kosovo’s statehood undermines long-term peace and keeps tensions alive in the Western Balkans.

Konjufca highlighted that Kosovo has developed functioning democratic institutions and maintains a clear Euro-Atlantic orientation. According to him, mutual recognition remains the only sustainable path toward normalization and regional stability. He also criticized Belgrade’s approach in the dialogue process, describing it as inconsistent and, at times, obstructive to meaningful progress. The report presented to the Council outlined the ongoing role of UNMIK in maintaining stability, while also pointing to persistent political and security challenges. Particular attention was given to tensions in northern Kosovo and the need for coordination between local institutions and international actors.

Diplomatic sources indicate that several Council members reiterated the importance of intensifying the EU-facilitated dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, with a focus on concrete and implementable agreements. Western representatives also called on both sides to avoid actions that could escalate tensions on the ground. The session concluded with renewed calls for restraint, constructive engagement, and commitment to dialogue. Observers note that while statements like those of Konjufca reflect growing international pressure, tangible progress will depend on the political will of both Kosovo and Serbia.
